A calm evening at Portobello with the storm damaged groyne no.4 lit up in the setting sun, a storm cloud over the Forth and a hint of rainbow over East Lothian.
Commended in the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Competition 2024, and shortlisted in a portfolio of three images. Published in the Collection 9 Book.

A few minutes before sunrise, the sky didn't look at all promising. However a gap in the clouds opened up and I dashed down to see the sky ablaze with colour. The air to the east was cold, and a warm front was sliding up the country from the west. This line is where the two met.

There is only a gap of about 15 minutes in between the rising tide forming these amazing swirls in the sand, and them being completely covered over. Taken at Longniddry Bents in East Lothian.

A day when I never walked more than 100 metres from the car and spent a couple of hours just playing around trying to catch the waves splashing over the rocks.

An overcast sky lent itself to some black and white photography, and this rocky shelf gave me the diagonal leading line that I needed to create a composition. Bamburgh Castle from the beach to the north.

This image was taken during a family holiday to North Uist in the summer months. After a few days exploring the beaches of the north, we drove south to the island of Eriskay on a stormy day, and Andrew saw this little football pitch down below the road. We stopped the car so he could get a photograph and of course he just had to go down and play football on it as well. Very recently we found out it was featured by FIFA as one of the eight most unique places to play football in the world! The photo won Andrew the Junior Scottish Nature Photographer of the Year 2017 – for the second year in a row - and also won him the Young Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year 2018.
The image was featured by the BBC in an online article about Andrew's work and was also shared by FIFA itself on their instagram account in the lead up to the World Cup, gaining over 90,000 likes!

It was a stormy day at St. Monans in Fife and I was plucking up the courage to walk down to the end of the pier and put my head over the parapet wall to see what the famous zigzag breakwater looked like. I took shelter out of the wind and looking back I noticed this view towards the houses along the seafront. The spray was still causing a problem but I managed to get one photograph which was good enough before I headed down to the breakwater and got a soaking!

The beautiful coastline of Arisaig on a quiet evening in May 2022. Calm seas led to gentle reflections at sunset, the lichen on the rocks adding to the colour.

I took a late evening walk up the slopes of Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh to see what the sunset brought. There was little colour, but looking over the Firth of Forth to the shores of Fife, banks of clouds swept past, providing me with a series of fascinating shapes, illuminated occasionally by the setting sun. This old oil platform on the far side of the estuary was then briefly backlit by a passing shower.
This image was commended in the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Competition 2023.

Preparing for a walk from my house down to Portobello beach, I noticed on the weather apps that a line of rain showers was heading our way. Luckily they passed us by on their way over to Fife but I was ready with the camera and caught all the drama as it happened.

The beach at Sango Sands in Durness is beautiful and unspoilt. However in winter it is wild and unprotected from the north Atlantic storms and it was on a very windy day that we braved the 50mph winds blowing the sand in our gear and faces to photograph the waves crashing in on the massive cliffs. This was my favourite of many images taken that day.

Blue hour. Once the sun had set and the golden colours subsided, the sky became dark with hints of purple in the clouds. The camera brightens everything up of course but the blues and contrasts of light are intensified. 2nd of 2 prints.

After a long day chasing the light, this was a late evening stop on the way back to Ullapool. Our drive brought us to Clachtoll Beach, famous for its often photographed split rocks. This time I was more excited by the crashing waves brought in by the strong westerly winds and the late evening light catching the top of the white horses.

During lockdown we took regular walks down to Portobello Beach. One evening the sky offered little colour and I spent some time catching the waves as they washed up the beach beside this groyne. Out of twenty or thirty photographs, this was the only one that caught the waves at the right moment. These really are a bit of a lottery to get right.

I drove east along the coast with no expectations. However on my way, some dramatic rainclouds started to drift in from Fife. I stopped at Aberlady Bay and watched the geese start to fly in from the fields nearby to roost for the night. I hoped to catch a photo of them in a classic "V" formation, however none of them obliged and every photo portrayed birds in a random pattern until someone who really shouldn't have been out there, wandered across the mudflats and disturbed the geese. It was a lucky event for me as they rose into the sky in a long line which reflected the shape of Inchkeith Island in the distance. The sun lit up the falling rain and I ended up with one of my favourite photos of 2020.

An early morning visit to North Berwick led me east along the coast. At one particular spot I found a good view toward the Bass Rock and with a high tide providing some waves over the rocks, the sunrise delivered some lovely soft pastel tones.

Walking between Barns Ness Lighthouse and Torness Power Station, this old shipwreck caught our attention. Using the timbers as a foreground for his image, Andrew used it to lead the eye into the distance, and the lighthouse.

During a period of cold weather, snow storms piled in one after the other from the North Sea up the Forth Estuary. Some hit Edinburgh but others stayed out at sea. Every one was slightly different and I spent some time over a three day period on the slopes of Arthur's Seat photographing them. I have put them together in a small series, of which this is 1 of 3.

A family holiday to Northumberland took us down the coast from Seahouses to Dunstanburgh Castle. The sun came out now and again in between the heavy showers and one such splash of light crossed over the castle as we waited down by the rocky shoreline. It needed a longish exposure to catch the movement in the water but the strong wind also meant I had to shelter behind an umbrella to stop the camera blowing around.

A trip to Seacliff Beach in East Lothian on a day of big rain clouds. I'd just arrived at the beach and was rushing to get set up for a shot as this cloud started departing the scene. There was a clear tension in the image I envisaged - they seemed to be pulling apart from each other but just holding on till I pressed the shutter.

An amazing evening when the Aurora Borealis could be seen across the whole of the UK. We raced to Musselburgh near Edinburgh to get away from street lighting and after spending time near the harbour, we found this skatepark which provided an unusual foreground, just as the northern lights were starting to fade. This image went on to win Andrew the overall title of the UK Young Landscape Photographer of the Year 2017, an accolade which he is unlikely to eclipse anytime soon. Any framed prints ordered will be provided with a unique confirmation label.

The Bow Fiddle Rock, a favourite spot for photographers capturing its unique features. Located just off the coast of Portknockie in Moray, we endured days of storms before finally capturing the photographs we wanted. It was taken at dawn early one January morning and it went on to win Andrew the youth “Classic View” category in the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards in 2017. Any framed prints ordered will be provided with a unique confirmation label.

The Bass Rock is a former volcanic plug, now isolated out in the Firth of Forth. It dominates the view from the town of North Berwick and surrounding areas but it is usually a different colour. Over the summer months it is inhabited by the largest colony of Northern Gannets in the world, some 150,000 birds, which turn the rock white. This photo was taken early in the season!

After a very early morning start, we drove round the Fife coast to catch sunrise at St. Monans. The windmill in the photo is not a mill at all. It was used to pump sea water into the salt pans, where the water was boiled to extract the salt. A more environmentally unfriendly industry you could not imagine – eight tons of coal was burnt for every one ton of salt produced. The windmill was restored in the 1980’s and is now the Coastwatch Station for the Coastal Safety and Monitoring Organisation, and is open to visitors. The photo won Andrew the runner-up place in the Scottish Junior Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards 2017.

Known locally as “The Blocks”, it has also acquired the nickname the “Zigzag Pier”, but this is actually a breakwater which stands at the entrance to St. Monan’s Harbour in Fife. A popular place for photos, especially at sunrise – no self-respecting photographer does not have one photo of the zigzag stashed away somewhere!

After four days of terrible weather we got up before the dawn to catch this moment, when the winter sun rose just enough above the surrounding cliffs to light up the edge of the Bow Fiddle Rock, a well known natural feature beside the village of Portknockie in Morayshire.
